-
- Hi all,
-
- Our school is interested in creating some detailed maps of the forest in
- our area. The maps will be used for orienteering (kind of like cross
- country running through the woods, using a map and a compass to locate
- checkpoints) They need to show fairly small details, and I wonder what
- kind of results we could get with simple RDF equipment.
-
- Here's what I'm thinking of using:
-
- Three simple, crystal controlled, low-power (solar?) transmitters located
- at well-known places on the perimeter of the course. A moveable receiver
- with a directional antenna, used to find a bearing to each beacon. To
- locate boulders, downed trees, mudholes and other relatively small features
- someone would go to them, find the bearing to all three beacons, and later
- locate the features on a master map by triangulation. I thought maybe a
- digitized signal-strength value might be a good way to determine the right
- bearings. (I have some suitable A/D hardware for this already.)
-
- The questions are: (not necessarily in the right order :-)
-
- 1. Are there schematics, or better yet PCB artwork for the above tx/rx ?
- 2. What frequency is generally used for this purpose?
- 3. Most importantly, how accurate can the results be with a fairly modest
- outlay of funds for construction?
-
- I'd like to enlist the Science Club in building the equipment, so circuits
- designed around microcontrollers might be a bit _too_ complex! If there
- is ftp-able info on this subject, I would greatly appreciate hearing about
- it. I don't have access to indices of QST or 73, but if there have been
- articles about such equipment I could probably locate the magazines.
-
- Thanks in advance to all who respond,
-
- Pat Ferrick
- Science Teacher, Town of Webb School
- Old FOrge, NY
-
- (using K. Down's account temporarily)
-
- ps- we'll also need some mapmaking software eventually, if you know of any
- (preferably public) sources by all means let me know!

-
- Wow, my SlyFox review was one of the most controversial columns I've written
- in almost 6 years with 73 Magazine! Between the comments here and the ones
- I got at the swap meet today, it's clear that almost everybody disagreed.
- Half thought I was too hard on Ramsey and the other half thought I wasn't
- tough enough. Nobody was in the middle. The opinions expressed in this
- newsgroup are interesting, but it appears that none of the posters have
- actually built this kit. If any have, please tell me your own
- experiences---i'm interested.
-
- A couple of posts require corrections:
-
- 7/25/94 33/1735 Cecil_A_Moore@ccm.CH.INTel.COM (Cecil A Moore) writes:
- >It is a sad day in ham radio when kit-builders complain that they
- >shouldn't have to pinch or spread coils that they had to wind for a kit.
- >If you can't achieve resonance in a final by adjusting the capacitor,
- >then you must adjust the coil... an extremely simple concept. Should a
- >kit manual also be required to teach the physics that hams are supposed
- >to know in order to pass their ham tests?
-
- There was no such complaint. Not every ham is savvy about RF, and it's
- important to keep the novice builder in mind when reviewing a kit.
-
- In the SlyFox manual, the transmitter tuneup first peaks the two triplers,
- using two test points. Then there are only two steps that instruct the
- builder how to tune the final stage. I hope Mr. Ramsey will not mind if I
- quote them:
-
- "9. You should now be able to see RF power at the output antenna jack, J1.
- Adjust capacitor C12 for maximum RF power output. Connect your voltmeter to
- TP3 and peak for maximum DC voltage.
-
- 10. Slightly spread or compress coils L3 and L7 to maximize output power.
- Power should be at least 4 watts with a 12 volt power source."
-
- That's it, folks. The next step calls for a check of power in the low power
- position. By the way, there is no mention of a wattmeter in the first five
- steps of the testing section, which list the items necessary for tuning.
-
- The important point is that there is nothing in any step anywhere in the
- manual to tell the builder to make any adjustments to L2 and L4 after they
- are installed. Cecil, I did achieve a nice "resonant" peak on the capacitor
- when I followed Ramsey's directions. In other words, everything appeared to
- be fine, on the surface. Anyone building the kit and using the suggested
- light bulb load would have seen plenty of brilliance. But the kit had low
- power and high harmonics that way, which the novice builder would have been
- unaware of.
-
- 7/27/94 42/1700 Cecil_A_Moore@ccm.hf.intel.com writes:
- >Looks as if the guy who wrote the article in 73 didn't bother
- >to read the manual just like you didn't bother to read the followups.
-
- Not so---see above. The manual was followed exactly. I probably would have
- found the problem sooner except that the other problem (low tripler test
- point voltages) led me to concentrate my efforts on the triplers instead of
- the final. (If that sentence doesn't make sense, read my article for the
- details.)
-
- 7/26/94 8/346 jramsey@delphi.com writes:
- >Cecil, The manual clearly states to spread the coils for max power output.
- >We purposely have the coils wound with a 'tad' too much inductance - it's
- >easier to spread the coils a bit than to have to add more turns!
-
- Not exactly correct, as can be seen from above. The manual instructs tuning
- of L3 and L7, but not L2 and L4.
